During the Great Depression, when nearly every other luxury inn in Aspen closed, Hotel Jerome remained open — run by a bartender’s family who kept it going as the town’s only hotel. Its J-Bar also invented the “Aspen Crud” during Prohibition, a boozy milkshake later favored by WWII’s 10th Mountain Division soldiers.

When the silver boom was at its peak, Jerome B. Wheeler wanted to give Aspen the kind of grand hotel you’d expect in New York or Europe. Hotel Jerome opened with luxuries unheard of for a Rocky Mountain mining town — electric lights, indoor plumbing, and elegant tile floors.

 

It survived the 1893 silver crash, remained open during Aspen’s “quiet years” as a boardinghouse, and became a gathering place for everyone from miners to movie stars. Guests have included Gary Cooper, John Wayne, and Hunter S. Thompson, who famously made the J-Bar his personal hangout.
